FLY

00:00 / 01:09
Fly.jpg

The nest was made, the deed was done

And now began the wait

As I watched you in your corner

I pondered on your fate

Will we find enough scraps to feed you?

Will you live to see the day?

Are we really strong enough

To help you find your way?

The wait was long, the days stretched out

Summer was in the air

The chilly nights behind us

We had more time to prepare

We fought off many predators

We fought them nail and beak

We fought them to remind them that

Small doesn’t equal weak

The wait was done, the day had come

The cracks began to show

We let go of our bated breath

And shouted out

Hello!

Welcome to our family

Sweet apples of our eye

Welcome to a world of fun

Welcome to the sky

Today you may be tiny

But together we are strong

Together we can heal the world

With the beauty of our song

So welcome to our family

Sweet apples of our eye

And when you’re feeling ready

Get out there and fly!

The Fairy & the Elf

00:00 / 03:32

Are you allowed to do that?  he said to the girl on high

You’re just jealous you don’t know how was her short reply

I could juggle if I had the time, but I’ve far too much to do

You’re right, said the elf. I am jealous. I wish I could be you.

I’d happily trade places if you knew the magic spell

A tree fairy’s life is boring when you want to do it well

Just stand there and be pretty, maybe sparkle, shine or glow

No secret nightly missions. No shenanigans to sow

So I asked my favourite godmother to teach me something new

It was hard to find a hobby I could actually do

Cooking’s out of the question, up here in my tree

And teams sports are impossible, unfortunately

I already know how to sing. What else can I do up here?

But without a proper audience, it’s not much fun, I fear

Dancing gets me dizzy, always turning on the spot

And the risk of falling from my perch means I don’t do that a lot

So I practiced juggling baubles, first two, then three, then four

Now I’m up to five and I’m aiming for even more

Godmother thinks I can make it to ten, but I shall stop at six

I’m getting bored. It’s time that I moved on to newer tricks.

Well, you certainly know how to talk, said the elf with a smirk

And what you call shenanigans are very serious work

While you gaze at your star all night and practice your new skills

I’m filling out nightly reports and handling Santa’s bills

Do you think it’s fun to be the one to snitch on naughty deeds?

Much better to sparkle and shine from above, I think we are agreed

Think again, the fairy replied, I’d love to be you for a while

To see something other than needles and sky and visit the world in style

If you help me down, we could go together, and leave this tree behind

What do you say? Are you up for adventure? Aren’t you tired of being confined?

How can you say that? You want to escape? Wherever would you go?

Here you’re safe and warm and cherished. And I’d miss your golden glow

Really? You’d miss me if I weren’t here? The fairy seemed to blush

I never thought I mattered to this household very much

Of course you do. Who else can brighten up December nights?

Your circus tricks and sky high kicks are truly a delight

But if you want to leave us, then I’ll help you on your way

Who am I to prevent a fairy from seizing her perfect day?

On second thoughts, the fairy said, I think I’ll stay up here

But only if you come to visit more than once each year

On top of an activity, I think I need a friend

That’s maybe what it takes to give my story a happy end

The following night, on Christmas Eve, the elf returned to the tree

With him he brought a crowd of fans, and one very special guest indeed

Santa himself had come to see the juggling fairy from France

Not to mention one who also knows how to sing and dance

As he settled in with a whisky, the audience started to cheer

And the fairy shone brighter than ever before as she made her showbiz premiere

Alors on danse.jpg

Alors, on danse ?

I don’t know how to dance, he said

She asked him if he’d tried

Once, he said, in high school

And I truly almost died

My rhythm is abysmal

I just cannot keep the beat

And on top of that, I inherited

My father’s two left feet

The shame, humiliation,

Was too much for me to bear

So I said to myself “Never again!”

And went back to my chair

I wish that I could dance, he said

She asked him if he’d try

Just take my hand, I’ll guide you

I’ll be gentle, don’t be shy

Nobody is looking

And who cares if they do?

Dancing’s not about them

What matters most is you

Forget about their funny looks

Don’t listen when they tease

Just one foot then the other

You’ll be dancing soon with ease

I wish that I could dance like you

He whispered in her ear

I’d spin you around and show you off

To everybody here

To that she said, “Stop thinking,

Nothing good can come of that

When you dance, your brain gets in the way

Like a zealous bureaucrat

Listen to the music

Let it seep into your soul

Dance like nobody’s watching

Surrender all control

ABOUT ME

It all started with Laura Ashley wallpaper. A lot of my childhood was spent moving from one country to another. Time zones changed, currency changed, accents changed, sometimes languages too. The one constant remained my mother’s favourite wallpaper supplier.

I would spend hours in bed finding patterns in the flowers, making connections, spotting differences and counting them until I fell asleep. Today, I hope my creations have a similar mesmerising effect on kids of all ages. Like clouds, feel free to see what you want to see, to search for things that you want to find. The closer you look, the more details pop out. A nod to person or place. A reference to a song. A photo of someone you know.

If you would like a paper poetry creation, we can design one together based on your tastes, interests, favourite colours etc. A personalised family tree makes a wonderful gift. Or a cityscape peppered with familiar names. Don’t hesitate to get in touch via the contact form or directly at victoria.barbazanges@outlook.fr

Thank you for checking out my paper poetry. Don’t forget to give me a thumbs up if you like what you see!
